Selly Oak Community Development Trust
The Selly Oak Community Development Trust Ltd is a local not-for-profit charitable organisation registered as a Community Benefit Society, created by the Community Partnership for Selly Oak, Selly Oak Area Caretaker Society and local people as a response to the lack of locally rooted development. Any surplus created by its work has to be returned to be used to benefit the local area.
Selly Oak is home to many development projects but virtually none of them benefit the local community. Most developments are student housing projects or services aimed at students. They neither provide services local people need nor retain the profits in the area. The Selly Oak CDT wants to address these issues and create a more balanced community.
The core of this work is to try and make the area more diverse and attractive to families who will need services over the whole of the year rather than a limited term time.
Our long term aim is to encourage and revitalise the civic area with its five Grade 2 listed buildings including the old Selly Oak Library.
However, our first project is to build some affordable rented family housing in Bournbrook. The target tenants for the housing would be as far as legally possible, local people, key workers and graduates who want to remain in Selly Oak.
